About the car
In particular, the production of the Ponton Cabriolet is considered to be successful development works since this was the first model in which Daimler-Benz used self-supporting bodywork with no roof trusses. In order to avoid bodywork torsion, this required an extremely stiff and therefore heavy floor assembly. The Cabriolet was thus 100 kg heavier than the four-door sedan despite its shorter wheelbase and two doors.
It was hardly possible for successful people in the fifties to drive with the roof down in more splendour than in the Mercedes 220 S. It was the most attractive, the most refined and one of the most sumptuous of the big German Cabriolets. Motto: if you've got it, flaunt it.
